Sioux Falls, the Financially Responsible City
South Dakota, named after the Lakota and Dakota Sioux American Indian Tribes, is a wonderful destination to visit. Probably best known for its Black Hills and Mount Rushmore, South Dakota has plenty to offer the traveler.
Mount Rushmore, which contains the faces of four US Presidents, was carved into the stone by sculptor Gutzon Borglum. It is an awesome sight to see. Nearby is the Crazy Horse Memorial, which is still being constructed.
Laura Ingalls Wilder, who grew up near De Smet, used her life experiences as a basis for four of her “Little House on the Prairie” novels. The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, which extends from Illinois to Oregon, features some great hiking spots, and stretches through South Dakota.
South Dakota was mainly inhabited by the Sioux until the Black Hills Gold Rush brought white settlers in the late 19th century. This settlement was the cause for many Indian wars, the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890 ending them.
Custer State Park is South Dakota’s largest, and where you can gaze at 1,500 free roaming bison. You might also spot elk, mountain goats, mountain lions, and some breathtaking scenery.
